  • Happy Bats Cinema is an independently owned and operated DVD and Blu-ray rental/sales store in Vancouver, BC, Canada.    Our selection began with a couple hundred DVD’s from personal collections and grew from there. Our focus is sharing great movies with great people, and we have a great collection of films and customers. We carry stinkers too, so don’t worry about us not having a title that may not be on anyone’s top ten list, but yours.We specialize in DVD and Blu-ray rentals, all home video format sales, and special orders. We opened for business in May 2004. Our focus is on cinema from around the world, and from all genres. Our collection consists of more than 28,000 titles with dozens added every week. Our movies are separated by genre, language, directors, and a few actors.   We make up for our small space by being as helpful as possible, so don’t be afraid to ask us for help.  Ask us about titles you may be interested in owning. We carry hundreds of titles in store for sale, but we order DVD’s daily, and price competitively.    Special orders are only a few weeks away, when items are regularly stocked and not back ordered. If we can’t find a title, we’ll tell you why and put an end to your search, for what may be an out of print title. Many of the titles we carry are no longer available to purchase new, and are not for sale. Vancouver Blu-ray owners rejoice! Happy Bats Cinema has been collecting titles on the Blu-ray format since fall of 2007 and the collection is great! We have over 800 titles on Blu-ray, regular and New Release titles arriving twice a week.
  • Are you Blu ? We also carry more Blu-ray movies than just about anyone.  Several Happy Bats Cinema staff have Blu-ray players at home, so we can answer any questions you have about our shared hi-def future. Hail Blu-ray. Hail Blu-ray.
  • Why are we called Happy Bats Cinema?   It’s a mystery few know, but you can e-mail us with why you think so.    Some people have been very creative.  New animated bats have just been created by our Happy Bats friend Marysia McGilivray, who is our wonderful artist that put our crazy concepts to her great art, and gave us (recently for the new store) Lloyd Bat, super hero Bats, and the ‘Copa’ Bats.  Beautiful work Marysia!
  • How do I rent movies at Happy Bats? -you become a member.

  • How do I become a member at Happy Bats?- a short form you fill out, with necessary photo ID and a valid Visa or Mastercard.

  • What if I don’t believe in credit cards?-be assured, they do exist. But if you mean you don’t have one and want to rent movies, we ask for a cash deposit equal to the replacement value of the items rented.

  • Can my family or friends use my account to rent?-Yes, but they must be added on the original membership form, or to the account by the Happy Bats Member, in person. Phone calls will not suffice.

  • SOMETHING YOU MUST HAVE to rent a movie when you come into the store, is your photo. We may remember you eventually, but for our sake and yours, please have valid picture ID ready when you rent.
  • What is a ‘PAL’ DVD?-in our store we carry hundreds of movies and TV series that are not currently available on a North American DVD format. (NTSC) PAL DVD’s are from Europe and Asia, and can be played here on multi-region players, which we rent at the store. We can also order any of these titles for sale.

  • Do you guys have…- e-mail us, or better still, come in to the store and check us out.

  • Do you reserve DVD’s to rent?-Yes, but not weeks in advance. We ask that you reserve near the time you want to rent a title, or ask about an extended rental time on the movie you may need for a certain day. When you reserve a title it is reserved to your rental account, so have your membership number ready if you are calling in to reserve a title.  

  • Is your rental inventory online?-Not yet, but eventually we will have a full catalog of every item in our rental inventory. In the meantime, members can then reserve titles by phone or email.

  • Where are you located?-We are on the Main Street just south of 12th Avenue, on the East side of the street.       Across the street from us is the St. Patrick’s parish.            
  • If you are taking transit, we are south on Main street from the Main Street/Science World SkyTrain station, which is a 5-10 minute ride on the number 3 Main Street bus. (exit the bus at Main X 12th)


  • WE HAVE MOVED!!  We have moved to our new location at 2830 Main (near 12th, on the East Side of Main)  More space, more movies, nice view. Click here for a map to our new location.
